Make Art that Sells – Part 1

make-art-that-sells-lilla-rodgersToday I received my first assignment from Lilla Rodgers ‘Make Art that Sells’ e-course. I was so excited about getting started that I rushed through the instructions, so eager to start doodling some ideas that I had to take a step back, make a cup of tea and re-read the instructions! Our first assignment, or mini-assignment as she calls them (to prepare us for the big-un that is coming) we had to study and draw tropical fruits and Pyrex dishes.

This week it’s all about the Bolt Fabric industry and we will be eventually turning our designs into repeatable patterns that can be printed on fabric. The wonderful thing about this course is the Make Art that Sells Facebook page Lilla has set up for our classroom. Meeting, sharing ideas and drawing inspiration from the amazing artists in my class is just wonderful. It’s so amazing to see how different people approach the same assignment.

Over the next five weeks, I thought it would be fun to blog about my experiences and share my work with you.

Here are my first pieces. Unfortunately I don’t have much tropical fruit on hand and won’t be flying anywhere tropical for a while! So I began by looking up images on Google and doodling lots and lots of sketches on paper. I scanned my doodles into Illustrator and finished them off by vectorising them.

I can’t wait to learn how to put all the pieces together into a pattern.
